Completing a painting

April 28, 2018

Once an artist has finished a painting it is time to consider how the artwork will be framed.

The choice of frame is an important decision, as the frame can have a significant impact on the visual appearance of the finished piece of art. So framing is a process that some artists find easy and enjoyable, while others can find it frustrating and onerous.

It is often quite a personal thing for many artists - Some may choose a frame that is wholly guided by the painting, whereas some artists like to use a consistent style and colour of frame moulding, particularly when selling groups of work through exhibitions/galleries etc. Some artists prefer a simple neutral frame that quietly contains the image without embellishment, others opt for a bold or dramatic frame that adds impact and helps project the artwork to the viewer, but whichever frame is chosen, they are most successful when they work with the artwork, focusing the attention of the viewer on the painting and allowing it to shine.

It can take a little bit of time and thought to get the right combination/style but a successful frame is well worth the effort, especially after all the hard work, time and skill that has been given to create the piece itself.

It is a real pleasure working with artists, and a privilege to talk through their work and be part of the final process of discussing styles and ideas to help them find the right frame to complete the painting.

Here are just a few examples that we have framed and that work really well - but please also look out for our 'Art Glass' blog with further creative examples of framed artwork.
